Thornewood Castle is easily one of the most romantic wedding venues in Washington, especially for couples who want something luxurious, historic, yet full of so much character. It also earned a spot on both of my guides to ‘The 20 Most Amazing Tacoma Wedding Venues‘ and ‘20 Stunning Garden Wedding Venues in Washington State‘ because of its stunning European-inspired architecture, lush gardens, waterfront views, and gorgeous indoor spaces. Located in Lakewood right on American Lake, this Tudor Gothic castle feels unlike anything else in the Pacific Northwest!

What Makes Thornewood Castle So Special?
Honestly, a Thornewood Castle wedding feels like stepping into another world without leaving Washington. The exterior is made mostly from 500 year old brick from a castle in Wales, with twelve sandstone chimneys that each have their own design.
Inside, you’ll find 3 inch thick hand-carved oak front doors from a 15th-century castle, a grand staircase that is also over 500 years old, and medieval stained glass from the 15th and 16th centuries. Add in European statuary, gardens, lake views, and tucked-away corners, and the whole property feels historic and cinematic.
The founder, Chester Thorne, built this castle specifically for his wife Anne, which in my opinion, just adds to the romance of the castle. If you find that interesting, you can see more about their love story here. For couples planning a wedding near Tacoma or Seattle, Thornewood Castle is such a beautiful option if you want your day to feel elevated and romantic!

Why Couples Love Thornewood Castle Wedding Venue
There are wedding venues that are beautiful because they are newer and modern. Then there are wedding venues that are beautiful because they have history and a feeling you can’t really recreate. Thornewood Castle is the second kind.
The castle itself feels historic but the gardens make everything feel soft and romantic. The lake brings in that peaceful Pacific Northwest feeling, and the indoor spaces give couples a built-in rain plan that still feels gorgeous.
That combination is what makes Thornewood Castle so special. You can have a garden ceremony, an indoor ceremony in the Great Hall, a waterfront ceremony overlooking American Lake, or a reception inside the Ballroom. Each space has its own personality, but the full venue still feels cohesive.
It’s truly perfect for couples who want a wedding day that feels intimate and stylish.

Getting Ready at Thornewood Castle
Thornewood Castle does offer two getting ready rooms for couples to use during their venue access time. This is such a helpful option if you want the day to feel more relaxed and connected from the very beginning.
It also gives you the chance to have getting ready photos taken on-site, which helps the full gallery feel cohesive with the rest of the wedding day. Since the rooms are only accessible during your scheduled castle access, I recommend confirming timing with the venue as you build your wedding day timeline!

Thornewood Castle Wedding Venue Ceremony Locations
Thornewood Castle offers multiple wedding ceremony spaces, both indoor and outdoor depending on the setting you want.
Indoor – The Great Hall
The Great Hall has a grand oak staircase, a sandstone fireplace, stained glass windows, paneled walls, hardwood floors, and original artwork. It feels so warm and historic. This is the kind of indoor ceremony space that still gives your wedding a strong visual identity. It’s not just a backup space, but a beautiful option on its own!
The couples whose photos you see throughout this blog, Ali and Evan, had their ceremony here in the Great Hall, and it was gorgeous. I love how the wedding party and Ali walked down the staircase that leads into the room. It was the perfect entrance.

Outdoor – The “Secret” Sunken English Garden
The “Secret” Sunken English Garden is one of the most iconic spaces at Thornewood Castle. It has that romantic, secret-garden feeling with flowers, sculptures, antique brick walls, a fountain, and views of the castle.
This is such a beautiful option for couples who want an outdoor ceremony that already feels designed. The garden has enough that you really don’t need to overdo the decor. You already have beautiful architecture, greenery, and florals do so much of the work for you!
You can face the castle for a more dramatic backdrop, or stand near the staircase with trees and hydrangeas behind you. Either way, the garden gives your ceremony a setting that feels romantic without needing to be overly styled.
If you’re planning an outdoor wedding in Washington, having a beautiful indoor option matters. The weather can change quickly here, and Thornewood Castle’s Great Hall makes a rain plan feel intentional instead of disappointing.

Outdoor – Waterfront Ceremonies on American Lake
For couples who love the water, Thornewood Castle also offers ceremony options overlooking American Lake. This gives the day a more open-air feeling while still keeping the castle and grounds nearby for portraits.
A waterfront ceremony is stunning for evening weddings. With the lake behind you and the sun setting across the water, the whole space can feel so romantic.

Thornewood Castle Wedding Venue Reception Locations
Thornewood Castle also offers multiple reception options, which makes it easier to design a wedding that fits your guest count, the season, and your overall vision.
Indoor – Receptions in The Ballroom
The Ballroom is a beautiful option for an intimate indoor reception. It includes antique furniture, artwork, a chandelier, and space for a personalized setup.
This space works perfectly for couples who want a reception that feels warm and classic. It has the kind of character that makes dinner feel more personal than a blank ballroom. Long tables, round tables, candlelight, florals, and intentional place settings fit beautifully here.

Outdoor – Reception on The Lawn
If you want your reception to feel open, relaxed, and scenic, the lawn overlooking American Lake is such a gorgeous option.
The lake creates a beautiful backdrop for dinner, toasts, and sunset portraits. During warmer months, the breeze off the water can also help keep the outdoor space comfortable for guests.
This is a great option for couples who want the reception to feel connected to the landscape. It still feels elegant, but in a way that is relaxed and natural.

Outdoor – Covered Receptions on The Loggia
The Loggia is another great option for couples who want the beauty of an outdoor reception with a little more protection from the weather.
Their covered patio can be used for a smaller seated reception, cocktail hour, or buffet setup. It’s also a smart option if you want guests to enjoy the grounds while still having shade or rain coverage. For Washington weddings, a space like this is such a practical bonus.
The Best Photo Locations at Thornewood Castle Wedding Venue
As a photographer who has captured weddings at Thornewood Castle, I can tell you firsthand that it has so much variety! The venue doesn’t rely on one “main” photo location. The whole property gives you different lighting and backdrops throughout the day.
- The grand staircase inside the castle
- The Great Hall fireplace
- The stained glass windows
- The dressing suites
- The Sunken English Garden
- The garden fountain and sculptures
- The antique brick walls
- The castle exterior
- The lakefront
- The lawn overlooking American Lake
- The covered Loggia
- The windows, woodwork, and indoor architectural details
Thornewood is one of those venues where portraits can feel romantic, classic, playful, and cinematic all in the same gallery. You have the castle, the garden, and the calm of the lake all in one place. All of these options make the day feel visually full without needing to leave the property.

How Much Does it Cost to Get Married at Thornewood Castle?
Thornewood Castle’s current wedding pricing is listed through 2027, which I really appreciate because not every venue makes this information easy to find.
At the time of writing this, Thornewood Castle wedding packages range from $4,349 to $8,999 for six hours and up to 50 guests, depending on the season and day of the week. Major holidays, unique dates, additional hours, and additional guest counts may affect the final cost.
Additional hours are currently listed at $750 plus tax per hour, and additional guests are currently listed at $500 plus tax per additional block of 25 guests. Events must also end by 10:00 p.m., including cleanup.
Because pricing can change, I recommend viewing Thornewood Castle’s Wedding & Reception Packages page for the most current details. They lay everything out very transparently, which is one of the many things I love about this venue. You can also call the venue directly at 253-584-4393 for more information!

Catering & Alcohol at Thornewood Castle
Catering – Thornewood Castle gives flexibility when it comes to catering. Couples can choose their own caterer, and the venue does not charge the caterer a percentage of your catering contract. They can also share a list of caterers who have worked at the castle before.
Couples can provide their own food and beverages, but food must be prepared off-site and only finished or assembled on-site.
Alcohol – Couples can bring their own alcohol with a Washington State banquet permit, though hard liquor is not allowed. A state-licensed alcohol server is required, and there is no self-service alcohol. Alcohol service and music must end one hour before your scheduled event end time.
For the most current details, I recommend viewing Thornewood Castle’s catering options page directly.

Can You Stay Overnight at Thornewood Castle Wedding Venue?
Yes, and this is one of the details that makes Thornewood Castle such a unique wedding venue in Washington! Thornewood Castle isn’t just a ceremony and reception venue. It also offers overnight accommodations, which can be such a great option for couples planning a more relaxed wedding weekend.
Instead of your wedding feeling like it starts and ends in one day, you can settle in, enjoy the property, other local attractions, and just spend more time with the people closest to you. This is perfect if you have guests traveling in from out of town, or if you love the idea of getting ready on-site before your ceremony. Having lodging connected to the venue can make the day feel so much smoother and more intentional.
Thornewood Castle also notes that overnight wedding guests receive a nice lodging discount. For the most accurate lodging details, contact the venue or see their Overnight Rooms page.
Another detail that makes Thornewood Castle stand out is that they also welcomes honeymoon stays. For couples who want their wedding venue to feel like more of an experience, this adds to the appeal of staying on-site and turning the celebration into a full wedding weekend.

Do You Need a Rain Plan for a Thornewood Castle Wedding?
Yes, and this is the case for almost any outdoor wedding in Washington.
What I love about Thornewood Castle is that the indoor spaces are just as gorgeous and intentional. If your original plan is a garden or waterfront ceremony, the Great Hall is a stunning indoor alternative.
A good rain plan doesn’t need to take away from the day, it just gives you peace of mind, and Thornewood gives you so many beautiful options for a rain plan!

A Real Wedding at Thornewood Castle
Ali and Evan’s Thornewood Castle wedding was such a beautiful example of how much variety this venue gives you in one day. They got ready inside the castle, shared a private first look and vows in the sunken garden, and later exchanged vows indoors as sunlight poured through the stained glass windows.
After the ceremony, we used the garden, lakeside lawn, and grand staircase for portraits before heading into their cozy reception filled with romantic florals, a packed dance floor, Nothing Bundt Cakes, and late-night Dick’s burgers as guests left the castle. It was elegant, personal, and so them, which is exactly what makes this venue so special!
Kind Words From Ali & Evan:
“What an absolute dream to work with, Lauren! She’s so friendly, upbeat, and creative! She has a beautiful eye and execution. My husband and I had fun with her from the beginning at our engagement shoot which put us at ease for working with her on our wedding day.
She’s truly impressive. 1000/10 recommend 💕”
